Today's lesson, Racism. If you see something written here that you’ve said or done, use it as an opportunity. Take it as a wake up call and make the decision to grow, change and be conscious of your own privilege. Remember, I am not a speaker for the entirety of a people.
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
What I said: Non-Black people shouldn’t say the N-Word
What you heard: White people shouldn’t say the N-Word
What I said: People outside of the group a word is used to negatively target shouldn’t say the word.
What you heard: White people can’t say anything, ever.
What I said: I am Black and straight. I would never use a racial slur that is normally used against Asians or word negatively used towards Homosexuals.
What you heard: I am going to make things up that never happen ever in life just to make you feel bad about being white. No one says anything bad about Asians or Homosexuals, ever.
What I said: It’s not just about the N-Word. It works for any racial slur, homophobic word, trans* phobic word, sexist word, etc.
What you heard: I am trying to stop white people from having their freedom. I want white slavery.
What I said: Well, I really don’t call people crackers but it is important to note that the word “Cracker” is not a racial slur. This information is readily available if you’d do a bit of research.
What you heard: It’s okay to hate white people.
