Today's lesson, Racism. If you see something written here that you’ve said or done, use it as an opportunity. Take it as a wake up call and make the decision to grow, change and be conscious of your own privilege. Remember, I am not a speaker for the entirety of a people.
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
I think policing the word’s use in order to derail an argument is completely unacceptable. But I also object to using the word “bitch” or other derogatory female-specific insults (ie “cunt”). From what I understand, the meaning and usage of the word has some variation from culture to culture, so I don’t make a point of policing the use of the term unless I’m calling out another white person for using it. But I consider the word misogynistic, and I really don’t like seeing it used.
Though I guess women using the word with other women in a playful context could be seen as an example of reclaiming a word, so I don’t really have an opinion on that.
I know what you mean. I feel like this is one of those words that doesn’t have such a clear cut, right or wrong. So much depends on context. On top of that, so much depends on how people hearing it feel about the word in the first place.
As far as you personally not liking it, I feel like that is a good enough reason not to use it around you. There really doesn’t need to be some big explanation as to why you are not comfortable with a word. It not being good for you is all anyone should really need.
