Today's lesson, Racism. If you see something written here that you’ve said or done, use it as an opportunity. Take it as a wake up call and make the decision to grow, change and be conscious of your own privilege. Remember, I am not a speaker for the entirety of a people.
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
I know I said my last post would be the last for a while but this is too important not to write about.
If you can watch and get excited about a 30 minute video about Ugandan children, you can take 10 minutes of your time to educate yourself about Trayvon Martin. On February 26th, Trayvon Martin - a 17 year old boy - was murdered by a neighborhood watchman in a gated community in Florida…simply because he was walking while black. He was carrying a bag of skittles and an iced tea - completely unarmed. Zimmerman, the watchman, called the police reporting a suspicious person, and in spite of being told by the dispatcher not to do anything, he chased Trayvon down and shot him twice.
Today they released the 911 calls…you can literally hear him screaming for his life, begging “help me, help me,” crying, pleading before being shot.
And Here is the call that Zimmerman made to the police.
Zimmerman still has not been arrested.
If you all are going to be social activists, do so even when its not *trendy* and doesn’t involve colorful stickers, bracelets and posters.
Be a social activist when you can personally make an impact on an issue that hits much closer to home. Spread the word about Trayvon Martin. Educate yourself. Educate others. Bring justice to Trayvon and his family.
