Today's lesson, Racism. If you see something written here that you’ve said or done, use it as an opportunity. Take it as a wake up call and make the decision to grow, change and be conscious of your own privilege. Remember, I am not a speaker for the entirety of a people.
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Here is a handy dandy guide to let you know why your reaction to being called a racist is as much of a tell tale sign of your true self as anything else you’ve previously said to warrant the accusation.
A True NON-Racist’s Reaction to Being Called a Racist:
If the assaulted person believes that the Non-racist is sincere, they explain. Once explained, the NON-racist’s reaction:
A NON-racist would take being called a racist seriously. They would want to know why the person sees them that way and they would want to make every effort to never make that mistake again. Who knows, it could be a simple misunderstanding. Maybe it is head in the sand thinking. Maybe the person has things ingrained in them that made them say or act in a certain way. Whatever the case may be, this would be the reaction of a non-racist.
A true Racist’s reaction:
There will be no explanation or trying to “Explain.” A racist only denies and has no interest in finding out what they did to hurt the other person. A racist has no intentions to change. A racist (in their eyes) is not only NOT wrong but also, the victim. A racist believes that racism is wearing a KKK hood and nothing else. A racist does not believe that racism is systematic or that people are not treated equally. A racist only knows what THEY see and believes that everyone is treated in the EXACT same way that they are. A racist chooses not to see the big picture. A racist can only see THEIR picture.
YOUR REACTION IS MY CONFIRMATION.
[Edit] Right after I set this up to post, I saw this on my dash. I am going to have to say that they did a better job at this than I did. The amount of excellence in the BINGO card alone put my post to shame!
[Double Edit] This is also a stellar view on the subject.
