A friend of mine who is a “person of color” bought me some badly needed groceries last night out of the kindness of her heart and as a ‘pay it foward’ gesture. She was initially concerned that I’d take it as an insult, not because she knew about my philosophy (which only says “don’t expect” not “don’t accept”, idiot) but because of my race.
There is nothing inherently granted to anyone. Anywhere. It is an enormous mistake to take your perception of my privilege, which is likely mistaken anyway, as granted to me. It is an even bigger mistake to presume that you’ve done what would be required to deserve the benefits you imagine I have.
