An Open Letter to Racist White People
Dear Racist White People,
Can you explain why you are only angry when you think you aren’t the center of attention? You have a huge problem with Black History Month. Your arguments ranging from “It’s Racist” to “We’re all human.” Why so quiet about Irish American Heritage Month? No thank you’s for President Obama for that one, huh? Why no shouts of racism then?
Also, can you generally explain the “We’re all human” argument? It only appears when you are asked to acknowledge that other races not only exist but matter. If you believe we are really “All human” why does it take the acknowledgment of another race for you to remember said fact? You weren’t saying “We are all human” on December 15th but you sure were saying it on Martin Luther King Jr Day. You weren’t saying “We are all human” in March during the Irish Heritage Month but I am already hearing it in context of February’s Black History Month. Are you saying “We are all human” to remind yourself? Yes, dear racist, you do have a fickle memory don’t you? Maybe selective is a better word.
While we’re here, can you please shed some light on your anger over BET? Is there a reason that it never occurred to you that you know that channel’s specific name? Oh did I confuse you there? Don’t worry, I’ll re-word that for you. Why has it never occurred to you that the reason you are able to mention each and ever channel (seemingly) dedicated to PoC is because there are so FEW of those channels? I can’t name all the channels that are white dominant channels because there are so MANY. See the difference there? It seems that you aren’t angry because there are MORE channels directed towards PoC. It seems that you are angry that there are ANY. Not racist though, right?
As this letter could go on for days, I’ll end with one final question. Can you explain why you point to things that are run by or (seemingly) run for PoC as racist? Even though you are unable to give one single example of something that is for PoC and has a negative affect on your life. Martin Luther King Jr Day is a day off of work but you’re still mad? Black History Month has zero affect on you, your family, your friends or anyone that you know. Yet, without fail, when a PoC points to something racist that DOES affect our lives, like the foe “War on Drugs” you not only roll your eyes and dismiss it, you find a way to either make it our fault or make it about you.
Any answers you can provide would be superb. I know that racists like yourself don’t like to acknowledge your sick hate fueled wrongness. Don’t worry, if you answer, your racist views will remain as secret as they’ve always been. Either way, you’ll still be white so you’ve got that going for you!
