blackridiinhood reblogged your post: 18-15n-77-30w reblogged your photo:…

Why did you unfollow them? If you don’t mind me asking.

Because of this bullcrap.

18-15n-77-30w reblogged your photo: blackcontemporaryart: Mickalene Thomas Din, Une…

18° 15’ N, 77° 30’ W

I unfollowed them and their reaction was to go through my page and start favoriting and reblogging pictures I’ve posted all the while adding THEIR link.

Whoever is running that page is low down.

…but ya know, totes LOVES Black women???

SIGNAL BOOST: HELP ME CREATE THE NON-FETISH POC MEDIA BLOG LIST

fuckyeahfeminists:

strugglingtobeheard:

navigatethestream:

okay y’all, here’s the deal.

i’m basically working on a list of POC photo/media blogs that acknowledge the source of the content they reblog/recieve and are not out to turn subjects into fetishes.

what do i mean by this?/ give me an example

take the tumblr  18° 15’ N, 77° 30’ W for example, a blog that reblogs and posts a lot of pictures of black women. have you ever noticed how the minute this blog reblogs a picture the original credits/information disappears and up pops “18° 15’ N, 77° 30’ W” in link form?

have you ever peeped their mission statement where it says

This blog is a display of my greatest weakness: black women and particular types. I like what my friends call “strange things” about black women…like their collar bones, big hair, nappy hair, curly hair, bald head. The only thing that can top those things is a good smelling woman… Since I can’t smell them thru the www, I’ll be satisfied with the visuals. So right now, this blog is just a collection of images that have piqued my interest or satisfied some desire by forcing me to shake my head and punctuate my temporary disbelief in the momentary satiation with a “GOT-DAMN”. Yeah; nappy haired, big haired, curly haired or bald headed sistrines. Yeah, got-damn. Yeah; sistrines with pronounced collar bones. Yeah, got-damn. Yeah; sistrines with an antiquated fashion sense and a futuristic sophistication. Yeah, got-damn.

as athinkinganimal astutely put “If that isn’t some objectifying bullshit, I don’t know what is”.

this sort of behaviour when it comes to POC media oriented blogs really has to end. we need to hold blog owners claiming to represent us accountable for not doing shady problematic shit. we can have blogs that celebrate the beauty of POC existence without the mods going “i collect these pictures because when i look at them blood rushes to places and my body says YEEEAHHH BAYYYBEEEE!”

or taking credit for pictures that are not theirs in order to promote their own blog

yeah no that’s hella gross.

so if you know of blogs that are

  • POC only {people of color, as in non-white}
  • collects and posts photos and other forms of media
  • maintains correct attribution of sources for photos posted and reblogged
  • is receptive to being told the actual source for a photo or piece of media
  • and doesn’t fetishize the subjects that comprise the theme of this blog
then please send the name of the blog to my ask bog, or you can put the link in my fan mail. i will compile a list, put it on a page of my blog which will be viewable by all.
i should note: if you’re a mod for a POC themed blog and want to submit to the list, know that i will be going through your blog with a magnifying glass in my hand. i will be looking to make sure you haven’t removed credit from reblogged or posted photos, you are receptive to people asking for credit on their photos and subsequently ponying up, and you are not a fetishizing type of person.
so is everybody clear on that?
alright cool. submit away.

signal boost!!!!! i will be submitting some stuff soon!!

I was always annoyed by that self-promoting URL they would put under every post. And I loved that they highlighted black beauties, but I had to unfollow bc after reading this it’s just creepy and makes me sad :(

I hated that link too. I never read their statement until now either. Unfollowed.

HAPPY BIRfDAY RILEY!

I hope it’s a perfect day for you.

Thoughts on a Possible Page addition?

Is there any interest in food specific, home gardening? I am such a fan of cooking and with the ongoing discussions of food deserts, I wondered if anyone would be interested in an addition on home gardening. Not everyone has a yard or outside area that they are able to use so if this is something I added to the page, it would likely focus on indoor gardening.

If so, it wouldn’t be added until the Fall but I would love to know if there is any interest in this possible addition.

Preferences on Page Additions?

This summer, I will be doing a weekly book review. I’ll add a “Summer reading list” section to my page. I have a pretty good list ready to go but I wanted to know how people actually read. So far, I am trying to do reviews of books that can be read traditionally or listened to as an audio book (So far, everything is available on iTunes). However, I thought that with today’s options, there may be other avenues that people are using regularly. Is there some other form that you use that you would like me to make sure is available for the books reviewed?

Hiatus

I will be taking a break until Monday May 28th.

I have posts set up to come out each day. Only one per day to try to offset the large amount of posting I’ve done over the last few days! Of course, this is assuming the queue will be working sometime soon?

Anyway, a couple of the post are about additions and possible changes I wanted your thoughts on. They are set up as question posts so if you have an opinion, please let me know what it is.

See you guys soon! Be kind, rewind.

There is a lot going on in Chicago right now. Scary shit. The pictures and the people on the protester’s side are all showing (and telling) stories of the evil cops doing unthinkable things to the innocent, law abiding, protesters. This is a half truth.

The cops ARE doing uncoscionable things. No question.

However, the protesters are not necessarily the beacon of integrity either.

It’s pretty damn hard to be on the side of “Good” when both sides seem to be evil.

Don’t get me wrong, the INTENDED reason’s behind the protests seem to be noble. However, if action is going to be taken, those actions also need to be noble.

Yes, I am sure someone will pipe up with the “Not ALL” argument but think about it. Are you only wanting to use the “Not ALL” argument on the protesters or are you willing to use it on the cops as well? If not both, than neither.

I no longer have concern for the protesters or the cops. My concern is now with the people I care about that actually live in that city and are being accosted on a regular basis by BOTH the cops AND the protesters.

You can’t fight for what is right while joyously causing harm.

I have been waiting to make a post on this until there was a little more to go off of, but I agree with the top; I trust Karn’s word over anything else.

However, I disagree that “actions must be noble”. Isn’t that what we sit here fighting against all the time. If you are taking action against people who aren’t doing anything, that’s one case. But don’t generalize it; people will use it as an excuse to say that everyone needs to be nice when facing oppression because that’s the “noble” thing to do.

I’m not talking about “Nice.” I am talking about “Noble.” You can’t say that you are fighting for the injustice of what is happening in a city, state, country or even the world for that matter AND threaten (or follow through) with rape. You can’t say you are there out of concern for the way people are being treated AND actively sexually, physically and mentally harass people that live in the area for no other reason then that they don’t seem to be “With you” in some way.

This is not about “Nice” it’s about “Noble.”

Trust me, I am not arguing with you on those things, however, I am pointing out that a lot of dissenters generally sit around harassing us to elicit these exact reactions and then claim the same thing.

You might think “noble” and “nice” are two different terms…but I would bet money that most white people have already connected the two in their minds. Media is a bitch and it displays the two as essentially one.

Truth.

Did you know?

dumbthingswhitepplsay:

yumadwhiteboy:

collectivecrack:

White American males constitute only 33% of the population. Yet, they occupy approximately:

  • 80% of tenured positions in higher education
  • 80% of the House of Representatives
  • 80-85% of the U.S. Senate
  • 92%of Forbes 400 executive CEO-level positions
  • 90% of athletic team owners
  • 97.7% of U.S. presidents

And then they flip out when they’re not allowed in the Women’s Tent.

I want to point something out about this, and people will be pissed, but it’s fact.

White men making money doesn’t just benefit white men.

It benefits white men’s girlfriends, people white men want to become their girlfriends, white men’s wives, and white men’s children.

In other words, by white men holding power, the following groups receive benefits from their money:

Even if the benefit is small. Even if your dad found out you were gay or trans and disowned you and left you nothing in his will, you were still raised with those connections and whether you like it or not, THEY HELPED YOU. Even if your dad abandoned you and never gave you anything but his pale colored genes, in you being white or light, you attract more of these people with money, who benefited from money, who will then use their money to help you. Even if it’s just in you “looking” like you’re innocent, or like you’re a good person that just needs a job (that hey, they’re hiring manager for because they hold most of these positions!) to get back on your feet.
Even if it’s just in being trusted enough by others who have to be able to provide to you because of all the positive rhetoric out there about people with your skin tone.
White men having the vast majority of the power? Shitty. Totally. But there is a damn good reason that white women in particular have surpassed men of other races.
